The many roles women play, and the pressure felt to live up to societal expectations, is having a detrimental impact on women’s health today as we know it.

Imbalanced hormones, burnt out adrenal glands from long-term stress, emotional fatigue and poor digestion are just some of the factors that can leave women to feel like they are pouring from an empty cup.

It can be a challenging gig navigating a career, relationships, household management and establishing your place in the world. Then, when you step into the role of motherhood, the difficulty of meeting all of these demands can greatly intensify.

Motherhood is one of the biggest roles a woman can step into, and it can feel like there’s an expectation that you should just get it and know what to do. But it’s a massive transition and one that can be very consuming.

This transitory period is recognised as ‘Matresence’, originally coined in the mid 70’s by Dana Raphael, it has since been revived by Dr Aurelie Athan who describes it as an ‘experience of dis-orientation and re-orientation (much like adolescence) marked by an acceleration of changes in multiple domains: psychologically, socially, emotionally, physically, economically, culturally, and spiritually’.

There is a deep and rich history of Matresence, and it is important to acknowledge this and the ongoing inner and outer struggles a woman moves through as she explores her changing identity through motherhood.

Since becoming a mother myself and navigating through the challenges and difficulties I faced along the way, I am extremely passionate about supporting mothers (whether it’s first baby, second, or tenth) through this journey.

And although many women may not feel depressed in the postnatal period, they may very well feel depleted with the shift in identity, role, and hormones, plus all the responsibilities they still feel accountable for. Not to mention the change in your romantic relationship and the little time you have for your partner, especially when your babies are younger. The postnatal period is a time of complete vulnerability, and it’s important that mothers feel acknowledged, seen, valued, and heard every step of the way.

I have completed additional studies in this area, including ‘Skills in Perinatal Mental Health’, through the Centre of Perinatal Excellence, along with the most profound and transformational training I have embarked upon: ‘Mama Rising’ by Amy Taylor-Kabbaz, accredited through the International Coaching Federation. I also invest the time to carry out my Continuing Professional Development requirements through AHPRA.

In my work with you, we will explore your value system and what it means to be a woman and/or mother, identify areas in your life where you can create space and boundaries for your self-nourishment, and using the Mama Rising Formula of Support; provide you with the education, tools, and resources to become aware of your own and other’s expectations and get to the heart of why you may be feeling the way you are feeling.

You may be experiencing Postnatal Depletion, as identified by Dr. Oscar Serrallach, a revered family practitioner. This diagnosis acknowledges the long-lasting physical and emotional toll of having a baby along with the ongoing, long-lasting lethargy and fatigue experienced as a direct result of parenthood.
